My Interview with AIA|LA
We cover topics from design philosophy to what we can do in LA to increase housing production.
Honored to be interviewed by AIA|LA.
🖊️ An excerpt:
1. Given your leadership role and past presidency of the BIA LA/Ventura Chapter, what is your overarching vision for a “pro-housing” Los Angeles? What does that truly entail for the city’s growth and residents?
A pro-housing LA is one where small-scale, human-centered housing actually stands a chance. It means moving beyond our car obsession and building more homes for people, not cars.
The private sector can solve the housing crisis, but only if we let it. However, we need all types of housing, including market-rate options. Our city thrives on a diverse range of household types, including families, singles, multi-generational households… all of it. Renters and buyers.
Part of this involves unlocking the small developer to pursue missing middle housing. The spaces between huge apartments on busy boulevards and our overly precious single-family neighborhoods – that’s one of the next big opportunities.
I’m hopeful that new state laws on small lot subdivision and parking reform can bring about a new generation of developers that will build for-sale homes in the urban core again. I’m calling this Small Lot Subdivision 2.0, and a guide is in the works.
